County Bacău has three cities, the largest
being Bacău on the lower plains with a population of 200,000, as well as
Oneşti and Moineşti in the foothills of the Eastern Carpathian
mountains.
The county also has 5 towns, Comăneşti, Buhuşi, Dărmăneşti, Târgu
Ocna, and Slănic Moldova, along with 80 communes.

Culture & Education
Although not a traditional educational centre in Romania,
Bacău has a public university and several
colleges. The Bacău Athenaeum and a philharmonic
orchestra are located here, as well as Bacovia Dramatic Theatre.
Bacău is also the birthplace of some of
Romania's most important writers, including Vasile Alecsandri and George
Bacovia.

Bacău is the main city in County
Bacău with over 200,000 city dwellers situated in
the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains. The city is located on
the Bistriţa River, which meets the Sireţ River
about 8 kilometres (5 miles) to the south of Bacău.

International Airport which provides daily direct links with
Romanian cities Bucharest and Timişoara, and international links with 11

The Bacău railway station (Gara
Bacău) is one of the busiest in Romania; it has
access to the Romanian railway main trunk number 500. Thus the city is
connected to the main Romanian cities; the railway station is an
important transit stop for international trains from Ukraine, Russia,
Bulgaria.
The city has access to the DN2 road (E85) that links it to the
Romanian capital, Bucharest (to the south) and the cities of Suceava and
Iaşi (to the north). The European route E574 is an important access road
to Transylvania and the city of Braşov. Also the city is located also
at the intersection of several national roads of secondary importance.
Geography
Topography of Bacău
County Bacău has a total area of 6,621 km˛, and the city of
Băcău is about 300 km north of Bucharest. The West side of the
county are mountains from the Eastern Carpathian group. Here,
along the valleys of the Oituz River and Trotuş River there are
two important links between Moldavia and Transylvania, with the
Ghimeş pass linking Bacău to Transylvania.
Towards the rising sun, sloping hills roll down to the Siret
River valley which crosses the county from North to South in the
middle. On the East side there is the Moldavian Plateau crossed
by many small rivers.
Neighbouring Counties
Bacău is neighboured bz County Vaslui to the east, Harghita and
Covasna in Transilvania to the west, Neamţ to the north, and Vrancea to
the south.
Population
In 2002, County Bacău had a population of
706,623 and the population density was 113/km˛.
Demographically, Romanians are over 90%, with Hungarians Csángós at
0.7% (about 5,000) and a small population of Romas.
Economy
The county of Bacău was one of the most industrialized regions in
the communist period and it remained Moldova's most important industrial
center ever since. There are two large oil refineries at Oneşti and
Dărmăneşti. Following the collapse of the communist regime, Bacău
continued to be the region's most important GDP supplier, but the county
became more famous for the controversial figures involved in local
economy than for its performance.
The predominant industries in the county are the the chemical and oil
industry, followed by the food industry, construction materials, wood
and paper, textile, mechanical components, and also aeronautics.
In Bacău county there are important reserves of oil and salt, and coal
is mined in a few areas.
The city of Bacău is disputing with Iaşi the
unofficial position of Moldova's most important economic centre. The
city benefits from the existence of an airport and it has access to
several European roads.
Sports
The local football team FCM Bacău plays in
the first Romanian championship, Divizia A (not anymore), being a team
with moderate and respectable results.
