County Maramureş
In Maramures

Marvelous Maramureş!

County Maramureş is the crucible of Romanian culture and tradition.  Not just the folk museum kind, but a culture kept glowingly alive in the hills and dales of this precious pocket of Old Europe.

The county is well known for its woodworking, from impressive churches and houses and finely carved gates and totem-like signposts.
The richest of these rural areas of the region have few roads, which are often impassable to all but horse carts or determined walkers.

Geography

County Maramureş is bordered by counties Suceava in the east, Transilvanian counties Sălaj, Cluj and Bistriţa-Năsăud in the south, and shares the Maramureş region with County Satu Mare to the west.

Across the border in the Ukraine to the north of County Maramureş are the oblasts of Ivano-Frankivsk and Zakarpattia.

This county has a total area of 6,304 km˛, with 43% occupied by the Rodna Mountains.  The tallest peak is the Pietrosul at 2303m, and the Gutâi and Ţibleş Mountains form the Maramureş region of the Eastern Carpathians.  The rest are either hills and plateaus or valleys.  The region is crossed by Tisa River and some of its tributaries, the Iza, Viseu, and Mara rivers.

Demographics

In 2002, it had a population of 510,110 and the population density was 81/km˛, of which 81% are Romanian, 11% Hungarian, 7% are Ukrainian and about 1.5% ethnic Rromas.

Economy

Maramureş is known for the persistence of its agricultural traditions, largely unaffected by industrialisation.  The region escaped collectivisation under Communist dictator Nicolae Ceauşescu, with the result that local people retain a very close relationship with the land.  Ploughing, planting, harvesting, hay-making and almost every demand of farming are met by manual labour.
The region is a strong mining region - generally metals other than iron; around Baia Mare some industrial complexes were built during the communist period which heavily pollute the area.

Towns

The two main municipalities in County Maramureş are Baia Mare and Sighetu Marmaţiei, accompanied by the seven smaller towns of Baia Sprie, Borşa, Cavnic, Seini, Târgu Lăpuş, Tăuţii-Măgherăuş and Vişeu de Sus.   The county is dotted with 62 communes from Ardusat and Călineşti to Rona de Jos, Săpânţa and Moisei, along with countless deeply charming villages.

Cars in Maramureş have license plates starting with MM, and the dialling code to reach the county is (x62)

  Communications

 Dialling County Maramureş

All of the phone numbers in County Maramureş start with (262) or (362), depending on whether the service is through the old state-run operator RomTelecom, or from one of the newer entrants into the market in Romania.

Dailling to Maramureş, you must remove any leading zero from the county code portion of the phone number, so that (0262) becomes (262).   Dialling a mobile number, you do the same, dropping the zero from the (07XX) part of the number, to make it (7XX).   Both landlines and mobiles have 6 digits following the initial county code.
For full dialling information and a chart of county codes, see our Dialling Romania section here
