County Mureş is surrounded by other
Transilvanian counties, from County Harghita in the east, to
Braşov and Sibiu in the south, Alba to the south-west, and
counties Cluj and Bistriţa-Năsăud in the west and north. Only
County Suceava is considered in another region, to the north-west of
County Mureş.
With an area of 6,714 km˛,
County Mureş features on the north-eastern side the
Calimani-Gurghiu mountains and the sub-Carpathian
hills, members of the Inner Eastern Carpathians. The rest of the county
is part of the Transylvanian Plateau, with deep but wide valleys.
The main river crossing the county is the Mureş
River. The Târnava Mare and the Târnava Mică, tributaries of the Mureş
River, also cross the county.
Demographics
In 2002, Mureş had a population of 580,851 and the
population density was 86.5/km˛, of which most (53%) are Romanian, with
39% ethnic Hungarians, and 7% Rroma.
Religion
In terms of religion, 53.3% of the population are
Romanian Orthodox,27% belong to the Reformed Church, while 9.5% belong to
the Roman Catholic Church.2,770 people (0.5%) declared themselves atheist,
non-religious or did not declare a religion.
Economy
The predominant industries in the county include
the wood industry, food processing and production, textiles, glass and
ceramics manufacturing, construction materials, and at Reghin, the
production of musical instruments.
Mureş County and Sibiu County together produce
about 50% of the natural gas developed in Romania. Salt is also extracted
in the county.
