Romania's sweeping mountains, rolling plains and verdant river valleys
have made it challenging for road and rail line builders.
Despite being a remarkable feat of engineering the Transfăgărăşean
highway claimed hundreds of lives during it's cruel construction under the
mad dictator Ceaşescu.
The most modern stretch of freeway runs from the car manufacturing centre
of Piteşti through to Bucharest and on towards
Constanţa on the Black Sea coast.
The Transilvanian Highway is being built slowly, and other major roads
are planned. Otherwise, Romania stands much like America was in the
1950s, with some freeways planned, but very few built.
But the winding roads and breathtaking scenery will make the slightly

Se învecinează la Est cu Republica Moldova, Ucraina şi Marea
Neagră; la Sud - cu Bulgaria; la Sud şi Sud-Vest - cu Uniunea
Serbia-Muntenegru; la Vest - cu Ungaria, iar la Nord - cu
Ucraina.
Cu o suprafaţă de 238.391 km2 România se află pe
locul 12 în Europa. 31% din suprafaţa ţării este ocupată de
munţi, 33% de coline şi platouri, iar restul de 36% - de câmpii.
Munţii, care se numesc Carpaţii
României, au în componenţa lor: Carpaţii
Orientali (de la frontiera de nord până la Valea
Prahovei), cu cel mai înalt pisc Pietrosul (2 303m), din Munţii
Rodna; Carpaţii Meridionali (de la Valea
Prahovei până la culoarul Timiş-Cerna-Bistra-Strei), cu
altitudinea maximă în Munţii Făgăraş (vârful Moldoveanu, 2 543m)
şi Carpaţii Apuseni (Occidentali), (de la Valea
Dunării la Valea Someşului), cu înălţimea maximă în vârful
Curcubăta (1 848m).
În interiorul arcului carpatic, se întinde Platoul
Transilvaniei (altitudine de la 400 m, la 700 m). În
nord-vest, se află Platoul Someşului , în est
Platoul Moldovei , iar în sud-est cel al
Dobrogei .
Cea mai importantă câmpie se află în sud, la
Dunăre, şi reprezintă principala zonă agricolă a ţării (
Bărăganul )
Delta Dunării, situată în nordul Platoului
Dobrogei, reprezintă cea mai tânără formă de relief a României.
Ea cuprinde 3 braţe principale: Chilia, Sulina şi Sfântul
Gheorghe, prin care Dunărea se varsă în Marea Neagră. Suprafaţa
Deltei Dunării de pe teritoriul românesc este de 4.340 km2,
din care 78% este inundabilă.
Bazinul hidrografic al României este compus
din: fluviul Dunărea, care curge pe teritoriul ţării pe o
distanţă de 1 075 km (din cei 2 850 km cât este lungimea sa
totală) şi râurile: Mureş (768 km), Olt (736 km), Prut (716 km),
Siret (598 km), Ialomiţa (410 km), Someş (388 km), Argeş (344
km), Jiu (331 km), Buzău (324 km), Bistriţa (290 km), pentru a
le menţiona doar pe cele mai importante.
Lacurile sunt în număr de aprox. 2 300 (plus
1 150 de iazuri) şi totalizează 2 620 km2. Cele mai
importante sunt: Razelm (415 km2), Sinoe (171 km2),
Brateş (21 km2), Taşaul (20 km2),
Techirghiol (12 km2), Snagov (5,8 km2).
Populaţia României se cifra, la data de 1
martie 2003, la 21.680.976 locuitori, cu o densitate de 91,7
locuitori pe km2 (date oferite de Institutul Naţional
de Statistică în urma recensământului din martie 2003)
În afara graniţelor se mai găsesc circa 12 milioane de români.

Ucraina, Ungaria, Serbia, Grecia şi Albania. În Statele Unite şi
Canada trăiesc de asemenea circa 2 milioane de români sau
descendenţi ai acestora. Comunităţi importante se mai află în
Australia, Africa de Sud şi America de Sud.
Din punct de vedere administrativ, România
este organizată în 41 de judeţe şi Municipiul Bucureşti,
capitala ţării. În cadrul judeţelor, unităţile administrative de
bază sunt oraşele şi comunele (formate din mai multe sate).
Numărul total al localităţilor este de 263 de oraşe, din care 80
de municipii şi din 2.685 de comune cu 13.285 de sate.
Bucureştiul are aproape 2.100.000 de
locuitori, 7 oraşe depăşesc 300.000 de locuitori, iar 17
depăşesc 100.000 de locuitori.
